What is PoE?

PoE stands for Power over Ethernet.  It is a technology for supplying power or electricity to networked devices installed in locations where power is not readily available.  The technology allows electricity to be supplied on the same Ethernet cable that supplies data.  The technology was first ratified by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering in the USA in 2003 as a standard.
