Many people perceive that system connectivity is a given. Recent research into high performance computing for SKA Telescope has revealed that it is a bottleneck to performance. This revelation has further reinforced our company principle of supplying fit for purposes (FFP). System connectivity is one such piece of fundamental knowledge for achieving FFP. Broadly, we have internal node (being a computer system) connectivity, external connectivity, and wireless connectivity. There is a hierarchy of performance capabilities owing to the way computing technologies have developed. Differing to this technology perspective is the application perspective as was promoted by Sun Microsystems (now Oracle) many years ago. This session will provide the big picture of the above ideas. This seminar will introduce the imminent releases of USB3.1, Thunderbolt 2.0, DDR4, Ethernet 100G, 802.11ac, and may be PCIe Switch. Smart people will find out from this session how we will use up the trillions of IPv6 addresses.
CAD Training Station (DRAFT)
We have benchmarked the performance of 2 popular and free CAD packages and found interesting results. Blender did not respond to a better CPU or more main memory but did respond favourably to a graphics card with more cores and more on-board memory. FreeCAD surprised us more. It did not respond to a better CPU, main memory, or a higher capability graphics card. There is enough incentive for us to look deeper into these packages. We will explain what these 2 packages do and the differences between them. We have begun to go a step deeper into the fabrics of CAD in general and identified several common file formats for exchange of designs between different brands or packages. We will report on our findings. Lastly 3D printing has become popular in recent years as the price of printers falls. Both Blender and FreeCAD support export of models to the most common 3D printing format. We will explain our exploration. All these efforts are for supporting the launch of our CAD Training Station and helping our peers to develop a new customer market.
Tandberg Data is well established in the area of computer system backup for having released 6 generations of LTO tape and the first generation of HDD media RDX drive. TD has recently entered the network attached storage (NAS) space and released the first series of Business NAS systems (BizNAS). These appliances come in either pedestal or 1U rack form factor with provisions of up to 4 HDD. They are furnished with tools for easy virtualisation deployment and Dropbox management. Why are they different from Synology, QNAP, and various models available on the market? How do they work in conjunction with RDX devices such as Quikstor? Can they be customised to suit specific NAS purposes? Marilyn Todd is the Tandberg Data sales manager for Australia and New Zealand based in Sydney. She will come over to Auckland to meet with our peers and to give us the big picture visions of Tandberg in back up storage and NAS. Marilyn intends to offer 2 prizes each with a commercial value of about $500 to our peers. Edmond will assist in this session on technical questions.
