This is the 3rd month in a row that this series of seminar does not focus on computer hardware.  In April we introduced computer algorithms.  In May we introduced software development.  This month we attempt to explain how we relate algorithms and software to doing real business with real customers, and we use Professional Audio Video as a real life market space (not imagination) to illustrate the big picture.  This intention will not be possible without the support of one of our outstanding peers in the group who possesses more insights and understanding of this industry sector than most of us.

Markets and Industry

Over the last decade digital media has come of age, and the Internet is used to transport video for a wide range of applications including teleconferencing & phone calls, journalism, social media, and entertainment. The amount of data this generates is staggering, comprising approximately 80% of the traffic on the internet (and growing!). The Professional Audio – Video (Pro AV) market is a key driver of this growth, and efficient video compression is essential at every stage of the supply chain. We will explore this industry and provide an introduction to the technical challenges of managing this data at each stage.


We will next introduce the fundamentals of video compression and how it is applied in practice today. We will examine how video can be efficiently represented by identifying and removing both visual and mathematical redundancy. We will then look at some of the coding formats in common use today and the algorithms they use to optimize data compression for video. We will introduce FFMPEG, an open source suite of libraries for the manipulation and transformation of audiovisual data. Finally, we will look at how HPC and parallel computing can be leveraged in this area, and the challenges we have identified
