The 1st generation of Opteron has 940 pins and the 2nd has 1207.  In terms of performance, 2nd generation Opteron has scaled over 3.0GHz and included the Barcelona dual and quad cores. The platform supports a theoretical max of 64GB of Registered ECC DDR2-667 memory modules instead of RECC DDR-400 in 16 DIMM slots in one system. It provides plenty of expansion capacity in the form of PCI-X and PCI-E slots. It supports up to 6 SATA hard disks natively and can certainly support an add-on Hardware RAID controller for SAS, SATA or SCSI. This platform will stay as the highest performance 2-way system for 2007 and 2008.  Compucon provides many optional upgrades to achieve the best fitness for purpose.
