4:30pm System Platform Developments & Updates since November 2006. The latest battleground is Quad Core between Intel and AMD. Is QC realistic and cost-effective for deployment now? Which Compucon systems support QC? AMD has requested the public to wait- what are the incentives? In the meantime, the 2 leaders have started another battle on the form factor of small PC: ITX versus DTX- do we need to know? For mainstream users, which system model is the most stable? Last question: will the system roadmap for the next few months be stable or rocky? A lot of research has gone into the above and we will provide a structured report to our channel members.

5:30pm Server System Health Monitoring and Control. We have previously introduced a piece of Windows based software called Super Doctor for health and status monitoring. SD incorporates some Windows OS level events and logs and provides a GUI for ease of use. The software is bundled with all Compucon Multi-processor systems and Workgroup Server. We have also previously introduced a more advanced tool called IPMI for remote monitoring and control. The tool consists of dedicated hardware and IPMI View software. The software is OS independent and is capable of editing the BIOS and booting the server remotely. A further advanced component is KVM over IP. It allows the remote admin person to take direct control of the server over the Internet. IPMI has a small price premium and KVM another bit more. We will provide an overview of these tools in this CPD session and a more detailed explanation of how they work in the CAST session in March.
