Data Explosion NAS, DAS, SAN … Print
May 2010

If we stored all conversations that took place since humans talked to each other on Day One, the total storage space required is estimated to be 5 million Terabytes.   This does not seem a lot of storage as we can buy a hard disk as large as 2 TB.  That is, a single person such as you may have the money to buy enough hard disks to store all human conversations.  Data is a different story.

There are about 800 million Terabytes around the world and the volume is doubling every year if we include personal photos and videos. Whilst we cannot produce proof of the figures given above, we are trying to say that there is a huge and growing demand for personal and business storage space.  If you think your PC is full and cannot take on any more files, think about NAS (Network Attached Storage).  They are inexpensive.  If your company server is full, read more about DAS and SAN below.  They may sound expensive but they are not.  Feel free to discuss your situation with the editor.
