Subsequent to introducing a brand new design of single disk NAS device in August 2004, Compucon now announces another new design of 4 disk NAS device for small and medium size businesses. This new NAS is capable of providing redundancy against hard disk failure via RAID-1 or 5, and supporting a hot spare disk that will automatically replace a failed disk. File transfer performance is faster than a server for a client on the local area network and even faster than the single disk NAS. Storage assignment can be done via a web interface, and the procedures are very intuitive.
The Pegasus NAS 410GT Disk Array System is an external unit with in-built PSU, CPU, RAM, and 4 IDE drive caddies. The DAS is configured via a web-based GUI. Basic network settings can also be configured via the LCD display and physical buttons on the unit itself. RAID levels supported are JBOD, 0, 1, 3 or 5. Installed IDE drives become hot swappable and are kept cool by two fans. The unit has been tested with 4 drives configured as a single RAID 5 array (1 spare). Compared to the DS-101 NAS unit, the Pegasus offers RAID capability over 4 drives but lacks USB ports (for USB storage/printer) and FTP server function. The Pegasus NAS 410GT is slightly faster than the Synology DS-101 in 10/100Mbps mode, but more than twice as fast in GbE mode.
