How Large is the IT based Economy? Print

The answer will shock everyone and possibly push everyone into a denial mode.  As such, this article will keep the answer for a while and start from the basics and work its way to the answer so that everyone has time to challenge the observations and assumptions made.  What is IT based?  Information technology is a general term to encompass digitization of activities and it does not refer to any particular type of activity.   For example, our computer accounting system is IT based.  Automatic passport check in at the Auckland International Airport is IT based.  Toll charging for State Highway One between Orewa and Puhoi is IT based.  All websites and emailing are IT based.  The next issue to examine is how IT is different to Non-IT.  Let us say that all physical activities are Non-IT.  Couriering a PC from Auckland to Wellington is Non-IT, but scanning of the courier ticket is IT.  Dining out in Wynyard Quarter is Non-IT, but the transmission of our meal orders to the kitchen and the checkout counter is IT.  Building a house is non-IT, but the design of the house and production of the bill of materials from an AutoCAD software package is IT. 

Non-IT refers to physical and manual activities, and it does include some automatic activities such as the automatic gear change of our vehicles but the level of automation is localized, limited, and not digital.  IT refers to some processes that are less visible to human eyes such as computing and signal transmission and processing.  The demarcation between IT and Non-IT may not be a fine line but they can certainly be differentiated.  The challenge is to note that some activities will change from Non-IT to IT based over time. 

Now let us look at the USA which is a well developed country with almost everything well documented and quantified.  The next few sentences in italics are extracted from an article authored by Brain Arthur and published on http://www.mckinsey.com/.

Since 1995, when digitization really started to kick in, labour productivity (output per hours worked) in the United States has grown at some 2.5 to 3 percent annually, with ups and downs along the way. No one knows precisely how much of this growth is due to the uses of information technology (some economists think that standard measurements underestimate this); but pretty good studies assign some 65 to 100 percent of productivity growth to digitization.

The information is in line with what we have read from Alan Greenspan who was the last Federal Reserve Bank Governor of the USA for nearly 20 years.  Greenspan did say that the growth of the American economy was largely driven by IT.  Let us safely assume that IT has contributed to 2.4% of the annual increase in the productivity of the overall economy.  This figure is not huge but if we keep multiplying 1.024 by 1.024 30 times over, we will get 2.   This means productivity will be doubled in 30 years.  The IT based economy will be as big as the traditional economy by 2025, which is only 14 years away.  If we think the impact of IT on our economy does not look that significant, we can be forgiven because IT is well woven with Non-IT.  Suppose we have accepted the trust-worthiness of the above narration, we may ask “so what?” If we are running a business, we must make sure that we capitalize on IT so that it increases our productivity by no less than 2.4% per year.  That is, we are able to do 2.4% more of business for the same cost every year.  This is only a median performance increase and we should do better!

Compucon has a long history of relationship with Asustek and it started as early as 1992.  What we will be doing in this seminar is a replica of what we did back in 1994 when the Vice President of Asustek came in to explain motherboard technologies to our channel peers.  Asustek has since expanded into graphics cards, optical drives, LCD screens, laptops, networking devices, and the list is growing.  It is the biggest maker of motherboards in the world and is the company which created the netbook product category.  At present, it is number 5 in laptop shipments behind HP, Lenovo, Acer and Dell and ahead of Toshiba and Apple; and is number 2 in tablet shipments behind Apple. 

Victor Ngan is a product manager of Asustek based in Sydney.  He will give us a better idea of who Asustek really is and possibly shed the light of how Asustek rose to the top whilst others went down the drain.  Although Compucon does not shift boxes or products that are ready for the shelf, Victor will take this opportunity of explaining a few Asustek products in this seminar in case our channel peers do not know about them.   It is possible that the session will expose a couple of areas where Compucon channel peers can add value and do better than other practitioners in the New Zealand PC market and then we will all be laughing.  It is a rare opportunity for channel peers to talk face to face with a world top technology company. 
 
Breakthrough in Man Machine Interface Print

We learned about terrorist attacks on London subways almost at the instant the attack happened and this was not through newspapers or radio stations but by the average citizens using a cell phone to text or transmit photographs.  This scenario suggests that the Internet and mobile networks have enabled every person to be a contributor of information. 

Android has appeared. It is an operating system for smart phones and is intended to be open.  An average citizen can become an application programmer and sell applications to phone makers or phone user communities. 

Extrapolate this trend and we get Xtion.  Xtion is similar to Kinect which is a 3D visual sensor first launched by Microsoft for XBOX in October 2010.  Kinect is the 1st device in the commercial world capable of capturing human gestures in digital form.  Kinect includes many entertainment games that respond to your gesture in front of the Kinect cameras.  Xtion is an Asustek product that looks similar to Kinect.  It is the 1st device open to any application developer for the PC platform in the world, and it is now made available to the Compucon channel immediately by Asustek.  The idea is not for channel peers to design more games for PC with natural human gestures.  The idea is to get prepared, understand the implications of natural gesture as a man-machine interface, and get involved with the development of applications for anything or everything. 

The session will introduce this amazing device and the eco-system that is in its embryo stage for helping the average citizen and bright IT practitioners make a splash on the world without the financial muscle of Microsoft or Adobe.    As usual, a short Outside the Square theme will precede this session.

Quick Install Guide for 4U Storage Servers V1 (prior to Oct 2015) Print

Dear whomever this may concern,

The Compucon Storage Server may have been delivered in two separate parcels - one package containing the Storage Server chassis and the other containing all the hard disk drives. This is because the foam/cardboard packaging can only accomodate and protect a server that weighs up to 37kg only, and not a fully populated chassis' with up to 24 hard disk drives (another 17+ kg).

Before you power on the Storage Server for the first time, please carefully insert each of the hard drive trays back into the chassis. Each drive tray has been numbered with an ID of 0 to 23. They correspond with the chassis drive bays according to the diagram below.

After initial configuration it is highly recommended to set up remote management (and email notifications in particular) for ongoing management of the large storage arrays.
