We can be a Local Cloud Operator Print
August 2011
Cloud computing is a hot term meaning having our servers somewhere in the clouds.  It can refer to an Intranet or Extranet.  However, people use the term Cloud Computing to indicate that they do not know where the servers are.  As such Cloud Computing carries some risks and this concern is real as some Amazon users have experienced.  “Amazon struggles to restore data to European cloud customers” is published on 15 August 2011 by Computerworld New Zealand.  Nevertheless cloud computing is real for various reasons and we just have to be very clear of what we are committed to.  In fact, some of us in New Zealand can be a cloud operator or have been doing so for a while.   A cloud operator can either buy computing and storage capacity from another cloud operator or owns the real hardware.   This is where our big brothers enjoy a much higher level of economies of scale than us.  This does not stop us running a small cloud or local cloud for whatever reasons as long as we can achieve an optimal level of economies.  Compucon supports small and local cloud operators with high density low cost servers.  The current offerings come in 3 levels of computing power.  Read this for detail.  http://www.compucon.co.nz/content/view/1137/5/

Realistically Smallest PC Print
August 2011

Why do we need a very small PC?   We need a very small PC because tablets including iPad are only suitable for retrieving information from the Internet and not suitable for business computation or content creation.  Tablets are small and portable and these are good features.  We want a desktop that is small but does not need to be portable.  Is there one?  Compucon has several in this category.

Most if not all of the very small PC seen in retail shops are more suitable for consumer use than business use because the former group is less demanding on system uptimes.  Compucon has paid attention to small PC over the years and has developed quite a few models with industrial strengths for business, corporate or professional uses.   Efforts to improve these tiny PC are on-going nevertheless as miniaturisation is simply a standard technology direction.

The most popular small PC is Compucon Onyx.  We have 2 versions- commercial and multimedia.  They have 6 litres of volume each, and have a wall mounted bracket option.  See this.  http://www.compucon.co.nz/content/view/501/215/

The most serious small PC is rack mounted.  These Compucon models are as serious as for file serving to a group of users.   See this.  http://www.compucon.co.nz/content/view/502/217/

The smallest PC can be mounted on the back of a LCD screen.  It is called Compucon Pearl PC and has less than 2 litres of volume.  Owing to the limitation of size, it has 1GB of memory and 4GB of bulk storage space and runs Windows XP embedded.  See this.  http://www.compucon.co.nz/content/view/733/249/
