Clouds & Digital Infrastructure … Print
June 2011

Our first attempt to do a topical seminar on 17 November 2011 has produced results.  Brett Roberts has singled out Smart Phone and Social Networking as the 2 trends that will shape the future alongside Cloud Computing.

We took a more within industry perspective and proposed the Rainforest framework and Capital to Labour Ratio for business decision makers on top of our well published FFP (fitness for purpose) and TCO (total cost of ownership) criteria for purchasing.  Will cloud computing be dominant in the immediate future?  Views are not unanimous.  We pointed out that data is a major reason for having IT systems, data volume is exploding, and so we need to adopt practices to manage data on a retrieval basis and take care of not entrusting a cloud to take control of the fate of our own company.

This seminar is the first involving channel peers, business end users and school IT managers as the audience.  Whilst there is nothing new for channel peers, the discussions have helped to add more substance in whichever perspective we wish to take.  Please see the slides there:

Dual Camera Streams … Print
June 2011

We have added 3 new models of IP based Megapixel cameras to our price list.  There were about 10 models on the list previously.  These older models vary from fixed focus to adjustable focus, indoor versus outdoor, day and night versus day only, and dome versus gun and cube in shape.  Apart from being IP based and Megapixel, most of them take Power over Ethernet (POE) and all of them have MPEG4 hardware compression.

The new cameras add 3 features to the group.

- The first new feature is H.264 compression and it increases the efficiency by 100% roughly.  This means videos of the same resolution and frame rate will require half of the bandwidth and storage size.

- The second feature is Dual Streaming.  The camera can feed one stream on H.264 to the recorder and another stream on MJPEG to a mobile PDA for instance.  The previous camera models can feed 2 streams of the same compression algorithm only.

- The 3rd feature is Wide Dynamic Range.  This refers to a reduction of the illumination contrast range of the environment. Most cameras will see a dark face of people entering a dim house from a bright street. With WDR, the contrast is reduced and the visibility of the dark face is improved.

Please find the pricing of IP cameras here.  http://www.compucon.co.nz/component/option,com_wrapper/Itemid,206/

Open Source Support Print
June 2011
Our general observation is that Open Source Support of Quadro Fermi cards is lacking as in June 2011 although this situation may change.  In the lack of organised information, this page provides glimpses of the support position with personal blogs.

17 June 2011 - RHEL 6.1

RHEL 6.1 has a lot more support than 5.3; it supported the on board audio and NIC by default. The USB3.0 controller was also supported, however I am not sure if it is able to operate at USB3.0 speeds as I do not have USB3.0 device to test it with.  The default graphics driver for the Quadro card is called Nouveau, it is an open source Nvidia driver but it only supports basic features (no 3D hardware acceleration it looks like). I have been having some troubles getting the Nvidia driver to install, however with that link Matthew supplied, I might be able to get it to work.

15 June 2011 - RHEL 5.3

After spending a bit of time on this I have been unable to get RHEL 5.3 functioning 100% on a CEW test system. The main issue is the NIC not working (the controller is detected correctly but it detects the physical link as not being present) and there are no default drivers for the audio or USB 3.0 controllers. The latest Quadro driver also cannot be installed at first because you need to download compilers and this is not possible without a working network connection.  A more experienced user may be able to get it to work but I do not say that with any certainty. It is possible the latest releases (currently it is at 6.1) supports the newer hardware as version 5.3 is over 2 years old.

15 June 2011 - General Situation

Out of the three major CAD application vendors, there is only 1 application that has been released for use with Linux: Draftsight 2D editing software by Dassault Systems. Aside from that there is no support; this was taken from a forum discussion on the matter of Photoshop support for Linux and explains the ISV mindset with regards to this issue:
Again, we've done the research.  The profits aren't there -- very few Linux users are willing to pay for commercial software. And the cost of entry is still high because of the fragmented Linux landscape.  The Linux world has to change before commercial software will have reason to invest in Linux ports.  And we haven't seen much real change in the Linux market in several years.
