SBS 2008 Hardware specification recommendations Print
April 2010
Microsoft Small Business Server 2008 (64-bit) is resource intensive and resellers have provided us feedback on how it appears to run a lot slower than SBS 2003 even on new server hardware. The following are guidelines only.

CPU - A single Quad Core CPU would be the absolute minimum that we recommend and may be suitable for very few users. The Compucon Platinum DXT would be worth considering as it will offer 2 CPU sockets and up to 12 memory DIMM slots.

RAM is possibly the most important. 4GB of memory is the absolute minimum for Microsoft SBS 2008 to install correctly. 8GB of RAM would be the recommended minimum depending on the number of users, with 12 - 16GB as the recommendation for up to 35 users.

You may find that SBS 2008 would use up as much RAM as the hardware offers. Store.exe as an example will use as much RAM as is available (and give it back when it's needed by other processes).

Disk storage is another major consideration - SATA is large and affordable but slow for random access / multiple users / server disk usage patterns. SAS on the other hand is fast but expensive per GB of capacity. If you are more familiar with older technology, SATA is equivalent to IDE and SAS is equivalent to SCSI.

Consider using SAS drives for SBS - 2 x 146GB SAS drives in RAID-1 is fine. If you require more disk capacity you could add a further 2 x SATA disks in a second RAID-1 array for storing large files / data / backups.

For performance, 4 x 15K SAS drives in a RAID-10 array offers the best performance.
