Greentouch Alliance Cutting CO2 by 1000 Folds in 5 Year Print
March 2010

An article from the Engineering and Technology Magazine published on 6 March 2010 is news-worthy because it talks about an initiative to cut carbon dioxide emission by one thousand folds within 5 years.  This is possibly the boldest claim we have heard for a while.

It refers to cellular or mobile phone global network operations.  According to CISCO forecasts, monthly global mobile data consumption will rise dramatically over the next 5 years.

Year 2009 90 PByte
Year 2010 200
Year 2011 600
Year 2012 1200
Year 2013 2200
Year 2014 3600

Data consumption will grow 40 times over the period.  According to current estimates, today's (March 2010) global communications network is responsible for 300 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emission a year- the same as 20% of the cars on America's roads.  If we take everything we know today and apply it, at the very best we can hold emissions constant.  The article said.  The above is the background for the creation of Greentouch Alliance.

Greentouch Alliance reckons that wireless networking is the energy hog of the communications network.  The efficiency of Radio Frequency power amplifiers is an area of attention.  Moving the signal processing electronics close to the antenna could half energy consumption.  Sleep modes for low load situations may reduce consumption to a quarter.  Algorithms for squeezing more data through a channel is another one.  More information will follow when available.

Matrox G200e Widescreen LCD support Driver Print
March 2010
Production Team,

The default driver for the Matrix G200eW graphics integrated on the X8 generation of Supermicro motherboards do not support a resolution higher than 1280x1024 by design (for IPMI 2.0 KVM over IP support). However the popularity of Widescreen LCDs means resolutions such as 1440x900 is common and the default 4:3 ratio resolutions up to 1280x1024 do not look good enough.

The resolution is to simply add the string “A0,05,84,03” in the S03X32.inf text file from the driver folder on the driver CD to enable support for 1440x900:

Image

A 32-bit driver v1.02.05 is available for download from this page as an example and has been tested on Windows Server 2003 R2 32-bit to support a widescreen LCD with a native resolution of 1440x900. Please note that KVM over IPMI will still work with this modified driver, but optimally at the default 4:3 resolutions such as 1280x1024. At 1440x900, the mouse input cursor would be off-set and inaccurate, and KVM performance would be a lot slower to use.

All Compucon X8 Workgroup and Platinum Servers will also have a modified Widescreen driver included in the Compucon\Drivers folder. You will find them in a sub-folder for the Matrox G200e Graphics directory should it be required on a case-by-case basis.

Cheers,
Edmond

From CCTV to IPVS- how we Gain from the Evolution? Print
March 2010
Cameras that are based on analogue technologies have reached the limit of performance.  IP based has attained 1.3 megapixels and even further up.  Analogue is about ¼ of megapixels and this difference is obvious on video footages.

With IP being the new platform, further works are being done for improvements and this means the differences will get wider and wider over time until total replacement takes place.  The current situation is a case of balancing fitness of purpose with cost budgeting.

Strictly speaking, fitness of purpose should decide the budget and we look for a solution giving us the lowest cost of ownership. In reality, some businesses are cash strapped and they will take systems that are not the best fit for purpose.  We have a white paper entitled “From CCTV to IPVS- how businesses gain from the evolution” for your perusal if you are interested.  Please reply to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or go to our website to register for the white paper. http://www.cnz.co.nz/content/view/56/31/
