Are You Migrating from a Previous Version of Windows SBS

Applies To: Windows SBS 2008

If you are migrating from a previous version of Windows SBS to Windows SBS 2008, you must follow a different process and Compucon is unable to pre-install your new Windows SBS 2008 server. For information about this type of migration, see the "Windows Small Business Server 2008 Migration Guide" at the Microsoft Web site (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=104281).

Terms and definitions

Destination server: The new server where you are installing Windows SBS 2008 and migrating your settings and data to.

Source Server: The existing server that you are migrating your settings and data from.

Process steps

This Migration Guide includes the following steps:

  1. Prepare your Source Server for Windows SBS 2008 migration You must ensure that your Source Server and network are ready for migration. This section guides you through backing up the Source Server, evaluating the Source Server system health, installing the most recent service packs and fixes, verifying the network configuration, and raising the functional level of the Microsoft® Active Directory® Domain Services (AD DS) domain and forest. You must also run the Migration Preparation Tool on the Source Server, which updates the AD DS schema, installs an update that extends the time limit for the migration, and configures Exchange Server to support migration.
  2. Create a migration answer file for Windows SBS 2008 migration An answer file is used by Windows SBS 2008 Setup to automate the installation and to run Setup in migration mode. This section introduces you to the migration answer file and guides you through using the Answer File Tool to create the migration answer file.
  3. Install Windows Small Business Server 2008 in Migration Mode for Windows SBS 2008 migration This section explains how to use the migration answer file to install Windows SBS 2008 on the destination server in migration mode.
  4. Move settings and data to the Destination Server for Windows SBS 2008 migration The Migration Wizard helps you migrate settings and data from the Source Server to Windows SBS 2008. This section explains how to use the Migration Wizard and provides information about the settings and data that you can migrate.
  5. Delete the old Folder Redirection Group Policy object for Windows SBS 2008 migration This is the final task to re-home the redirected folders to the Destination Server. Perform this task only if you had folder redirection enabled on the Source Server.
  6. Optional post-migration tasks for Windows SBS 2008 migration After you finish migrating all settings and data to Windows SBS 2008, you may want to map permitted computers to user accounts, enable folder redirection, configure POP3 connectors, or update mailbox quotas on your new server.
  7. Run the Windows SBS 2008 Best Practices Analyzer After you finish migrating data and settings to Windows SBS 2008, you should download and run the Windows Small Business Server 2008 Best Practices Analyzer.

Windows 7 Backup - System Image Backup Failure Print
December 2009
Production Team,

Update #2 - Brain Fade is now over. Simple Solution now below, all alternates removed.

Further to the Production Update #5 (and #5.1 :-) this update
specifically deals with the Windows 7 Backup System Image Backup Failure
in systems that have already shipped.

To Recap the Production Update
------------------------------
Changed default System/Recovery Partition Size from 500MB to
495MB and limited size to between 300MB & 495MB. This was done to
address a Windows Backup issue under Windows 7 where Volume Shadow Copy
requires 320MB of free space for Partitions 500MB or bigger, but only
50MB for Partitions smaller than 500MB. Technically we could have a
larger Recovery Partition to accomodate this but then we would have to
handle Partitions of 1GB or more which require 1GB of free space for
Volume Shadow Copy.

Issue
-----
If the user attempts to perform a full Windows Backup the Backup will
fail and the error in "error1.png" will be written to the Application
Event Log. If the user attempts to perform just a System Image backup
from the left hand menu of the Windows Backup screen then the backup
will fail with the error in "Win7 Error.png" and the error in
"error2.png" will be written to the Application Event Log.

There are several resolutions available however only one can done
quickly with significantly inconveniencing the user.

Resolution
----------
Summary: Shrink the System/Recovery Partition by 5 MB using WinRE/PE 3.0 Diskpart. This will result in a permanent 5 MB Gap between the 2 Partitions on the Drive.

Pre-requesites: WinRE 3.0 or WinPE 3.0 Bootable CD. You can obtain a copy of the WinPE 3.0 ISO or CD from Compucon or you can create a copy of a WinRE 3.0 Bootable CD by starting Windows Backup under Windows 7 and selecting "Create System Repair Disk" from the left hand menu.

Detail:
1. Boot WinRE 3.0 or WinPE 3.0. Open or switch to the Command Prompt.
2. diskpart
       select disk 0
       select partition 1
       set id=07
       shrink desired=5
       set id=27
3. Reboot & Re-run Windows Backup or Windows System Image Backup to confirm.

Notes: If you fail to set the partition id to 07 you will get the following message "You may not shrink OEM, ESP, or Recovery Partitions, or, offline vlumes. The volume you have selected may not be shrunk...". This occurs because the Hidden Bit is still set on the Partition. Use "set id=07" to disable the hidden bit and "set id=27" to restore the hidden bit as indicated in the above diskpart script.

SBS 2008 Partitioning Guidelines Print
December 2009

There is no concrete answer as to what partitions should be created for Windows Server SBS 2008 as we really need to know exactly how the customer intends to use server - considerations such as how much user data there will be and how big the Exchange data store will become. It is also dependent on personal preferences or what each administrator prefers and would like to support.

As a guideline, this is a sample configuration:

C:\ OS    As much we can afford to give the operating system. The minimum requirement for the OS partition size is 60GB (61440MB).
D:\ DVD-ROM   This is the default drive letter for the DVD drive, some may prefer to change the drive letter assignment
E:\ Swap    From 1.5 x the amount of RAM up to 3 x the amount of RAM is possible for a System Managed size; therefore the Swap (pagefile) partition should be at least 12GB, 16GB or even 24GB for a system with 4GB of memory.
F:\ Data store    This volume contains the data stores, such as the Exchange Server database
G:\ User Data    This volume contains the users’ data, including redirected user folders and shared folders if any.

Microsoft’s general recommendation is available here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc527518(WS.10).aspx where they recommend 100GB partitions for C:\, F:\ and G:\ in the sample above – the only difference is the missing Swap partition.

Out of Band Server Monitoring Service Print
November 2009

As requested by a couple of peers, we will offer a server monitoring service for as little as $10 a month for servers equipped with IPMI.  Under this service, TSD will receive alert emails from customer servers and will initiate immediate remedial actions during office hours including contacting the peer who may be on the road doing work for other clients.  Please give us some feedback on this service.

Keyboard Transitioning … Print
November 2009

We have used up all stock of the current model of Compucon keyboard (#4K4) but the next model is still in transit as of today.  We will supply Microsoft keyboards in the interim (next week). The new model (#4K5) has a sleek form factor and maintains a US key layout.  It has a USB interface instead of PS2. The key touch is soft to press and firm to feel and is quiet. It is a very high quality keyboard.  Please take a look of the sleek keyboard on the website.
