Power over Ethernet (PoE) is the transmission of DC power and network signals over the same Cat5, 5e or 6 copper wires with the standard RJ45 connectors. It is a solution for installing networked devices at locations where power supply is not easily available such as outdoor. It is also a preferred arrangement due to the reduction of cabling.
The arrangement was first developed into an IEEE standard in 2003 for devices consuming up to 15watt of DC power, and an upgrade to 30watt will be ratified in 2008
There are only a few POE devices on the market at present such as VOIP phones and IP cameras. However, we expect the variety of POE devices to shoot up rapidly soon. As such, knowing how to deploy POE is essential for our channel partners. We need to stay ahead of our people and know how to differentiate mid span and end span, as well as Alternative A and B schemes. POE is a fundamental knowledge from now on. We have published a POE Switch price list soon and will extend to cover POE devices later on.
