Nexenta Systems, Inc. provides enterprise class storage with high availability and provides for easy management of extremely large storage pools. It delivers feature-rich software on a software appliance. It is easy to install and manage. It provides online continuation of data for months and years, with tapes relegated to archival purposes only. The appliance is targeted for second-tier NAS and iSCSI applications that provide low-cost storage and simplified provisioning, expansion, backup, replication and archiving. You can use NexentaStor as a primary NAS in businesses that want to expand.

Versions

NexentaStor is available in the following versions:
  • NexentaStor Virtual Appliance
    • Pre-installed VMware or Citrix Xen image that runs unmodified on the corresponding hypervisors.
  • NexentaStor Unified Appliance
    • CD image (ISO) that you can install NexentaStor on an x86/64-bit computer with no virtual environments/hypervisors.

NexentaStor Community Edition Print

NexentaStor Community Edition is free and includes all the common SAN features of the production version, but if the amount of disk data addressed by the system exceeds 18 TB, the operating system locks most administration functions.

Features excluded from the Community Edition:
  • Auto sync and continuous data protection
  • Cloud storage archive
  • Cluster software
  • Namespace cluster
  • Target for virtual logical unit number mapping
  • Virtual Machine Direct Connect (VMDC)
  • Write once read many (WORM)
Nexenta provides the following licenses:
  • Free Trial
    • 45-day free trial (ISO image) of Enterprise Edition. Available at www.nexenta.com/corp/downloads/nexentastor-download
  • Enterprise Edition (Commercial version)
    • Provides a perpetual license with a limitation based on quantity of terabytes used and technical support.
  • Community Edition
    • Major NexentaStor release with many features supported. Only 18 TB of storage available for use. Technical support is not available.

(October 2013) Nexenta released NexentaStor 3.1.5.

In addition to general maintenance fixes, NexentaStor 3.1.5 includes key enhancements in the following areas:
  • AutoSync Performance and Reliability Enhancements
  • NDMP Updates
As previously communicated to the community, the licensed capacity for NexentaStor 3.1.5 remains 18TB usable.

NexentaStor 4.0 Community Edition continues to move forward, and there will be another progress update by the end of 2013. Please note that with the release of NexentaStor 4.0, the capacity limit for community is changing to 18TB Raw to align with their Enterprise Edition licensing schema.

 
Nexenta System Requirements Print

Nexenta recommends the following hardware for the NexentaStor Server:
  • 64-bit processor
  • 8GB minimum plus 1 GB per 1 TB raw disk space minimum
    • 2GB per 1 TB raw data for high-end performance deployments
    • Note: 2GB RAM is minimumfor evaluation purposes
  • 2 identical small disks for high-availability system folder
  • Additional drives/storage for data volumes
