(For Network Administrators) The technical session of the Compucon Forum held recently covered 4 topics that collectively will reduce the cost of operating ICT in schools and improve the value of investment. Owing to space limitation here, we will defer the summary for Remote Administration, Black Box Disaster Recovery and Server Virtualization to later issues. Server Based Computing (SBC) is not a new concept. It was in fact the first way of digital computing before the PC was conceived - mainframes and dumb terminals in the 70's. The advent of the PC is the liberation of computing capabilities to individuals. Whilst it is a milestone of human evolution, it will be short lived as it is only a transitional step until information becomes on tap. Another public utility. SBC is a step closer to the utility concept than desktop but it does not replace desktop at this stage. This is because the current typical bandwidth of the Internet and local area networks is not high enough and work is being done there. SBC would be suitable for about 50% (editor's opinion) of computer applications, but the current market penetration is less than 10% (statistics). True, SBC is not for all scenarios. Nevertheless SBC is largely a misunderstood or under-estimated scheme at present. The attached PPT will provide more information for review. |
