System Hardware Update

o Compucon Thunderbird has been flying on the back of Jasper with a 6-Cores processor and discrete graphics card for the last few months.  This will change soon and Thunderbird will resume its APU configuration based on the newest AMD desktop platform called A85X and newest processor called A10.  We will review this latest and long awaited technology release from AMD, and put it into perspective with competing technologies for desktop computing use.  AMD has rated A85X/A10 as for performance users.  Thunderbird is indeed better than Superhawk in graphics and price.  The 6-core Thunderbird on Jasper option will still be available at the same time.

o Solid State Disks (SSD) have made a lot of ground this year and they are quite popular in Compucon production for both desktop and server systems.  Are we still concerned with their reliability in terms of operational lifespan which was our initial objection to SSD?  We have shipped more systems with MLC SSD than SLC for price reasons.  Do we no longer respect performance?  Are SSD going to replace HDD in the near future?  Have SSD made further inroads in any respect recently?  We will address all these issues in the seminar.  Furthermore we will provide some tutorial information so that the info can be easily put into perspective.

Windows Server 2012

o Nathan is a Technical Evangelist of Microsoft in Windows Infrastructure and has been working with Microsoft-based networks since Windows NT 3.x.  He has been with Microsoft New Zealand since 2000 as a Systems Engineer, Technology Specialist and now as an IT Pro Evangelist. He is responsible for making sure that IT professionals in NZ are fully briefed on infrastructure-related Microsoft software.

o On this occasion, Nathan will introduce the newest server operating system to us and explain how we can use it to make a dynamic, highly available and cost effective platform for private clouds and on-premise data centres.  Microsoft promotes the system as beyond virtualisation and offering us the power of many servers for the simplicity of one.   The system helps enable the modern work style whatever it is.  Nathan will explain what the above lot means to us with a few demos showing new features and scenarios of Windows Server 2012.
