Jasper and Diamond are precious stones. Most of them have been turned into jewellery and some of them are Compucon computer systems. While the names do give the computers a sense of value, we want to know where the value is. Let us position them correctly first. Both Jasper and Diamond are in the category of Process Worker Computers. Process Worker is a term to describe people who perform a set of activities in a defined sequence and methodology. Accountants, payroll staff, receptionists, machine floor operators and retail shop check- outs are in this category. Students in the classroom also go into this category in a generic sense. As a process computer, Jasper and Diamond are equipped to perform essential and basic computer functions but not specialised functions which would belong to other categories of computers. As a consequence, these computers normally have small form factors. They should be simple, open standard based, low cost and fit for purpose. Some vendors combine the component housing of the computer with the monitor screen to save space. Does it give us benefits- we will explain in a separate file of slides. Some vendors arrange one computer to support several terminals. Is this fit for purpose and low cost? We will discuss in the slides. What about thin client terminals? The answers lie in fitness for purpose and total cost of ownership. Please contact
