AMD Cool & Quiet Feature Print
February 2008

AMD CnQ allows the system to dynamically and automatically adjust the processor speed, voltage and power to match the instantaneous need for CPU performance under Windows. For more information, take a look at the AMD installation guide document. CnQ is available with the AMD Athlon 64, Sempron, Phenom and all Opteron processors including Quad-Core.

There are 3 criteria to enable AMD CnQ:

(a) The motherboard must support CnQ and the CnQ feature needs to be enabled within the BIOS
(b) The AMD processor driver needs to be installed under Windows XP or 2003. Vista already includes the driver.
(c) In 'Power Options' under the Control Panel, the power scheme needs to be set to 'Minimal Power Management' to enable CnQ.

For example, Athlon 64 X2 AM2 4200+ processor default CPU clock frequency is 2.2GHz. With CnQ enabled, the frequency drops to just under 1.0GHz when idling.
