We have built a super-large video surveillance system consisting of 156 modern digital cameras for monitoring mostly common areas of an apartment complex in Auckland. Many other systems were limited to 16 cameras, 32 cameras, or maybe 64 cameras. How were the limits set? How did Compucon break the limits?

The truth is that modern video surveillance servers and recorders are based on PC technologies. A PC engineering company knows very well where and what the limits are. In fact, expansion of this system to 192 or even to 256 cameras has been provided for. The ability of building such a large video surveillance system is an intellectual capability. Any company with deep knowledge of PC technologies can do the same, while keeping things simple by conforming to open industry standards per se.

There is an industry norm that the installation price for a large system is not proportional to the number of cameras but is more like exponentially higher. In this case, the price of the super-large system from Compucon is a lot lower than the norm. Despite the much lower price, the retrieval of footage from any one of the 156 cameras is as easy as a super-expensive system or as if the system has a few cameras.
