Traditionally, video surveillance comprises of a closed-circuit television (CCTV) system and is the use of video cameras to transmit moving pictures to a video recorder or set of monitors for the purposes of security.

CCTV is often used for video surveillance in areas that may need monitoring such as cashiers, commercial banks, ATMs and tellers, casinos, airports etc. It is most effective for deterring crime but it is often used for monitoring.
