July 2011
This page shows how various application software packages responded to Quadro and GeForce.  The machine for testing has the same hardware and operating system configurations other than the GPU card.  The key specifications of Quadro 2000 and GeForce GTS450 are similar or the same in having 192 CUDA cores and 1GB of GDDR5 memory.
  1. AutoCAD 2011
  2. Photoshop CS5.5
  3. Premiere Pro CS5.5

AutoCAD 2011
We tested AutoCAD 2011 on a Compucon machine with GeForce GTS450 and Quadro 2000 in July 2011 and obtained the following results.  Interestingly GTS450 performed better than Quadro 2000 (see * below).  When we tested again with an extra Nvidia performance driver for Quadro, the score went up 4 times.  The performance driver was only available for Quadro and not GeForce.  It made a huge difference.

GeForce Base Quadro Base* Quadro Performance
3D 1223 1008 4327
Total Time (Mins) 14 14 12

*The reduced 3D score between the Base GeForce and Base Quadro can partly be explained by the driver difference. The Quadro has to use an outdated driver (v265.70) to remain certified by AutoCAD and to work with the extra Nvidia performance driver. A separate Base test was done using the latest Quadro driver (v275.36) and a 3D score of 1119 was received and it was still below GeForce.  We were unable to interpret the test results with accuracy but we were certain that Quadro with a finetuned driver produced the best performance.

Photoshop CS5.5

We tested Photoshop CS5.5 on a Compucon machine with GeForce GT450 and Quadro 2000 in July 2011 and obtained the same results from Speedtest
GeForce: 12.5 Seconds
Quadro: 12.5 Seconds
Similarly we obtained the same or similar results from another benchmark system PBMV3

Type of Tests GeForce Quadro
Texturiser Test (1)

Premiere Pro CS5.5

We tested Premiere Pro CS5.5 on a Compucon machine with GeForce GT450 and Quadro 2000 in July 2011 and obtained a better score for Quadro than GeForce from PPBM5

*Lower is better* GeForce  Quadro
Disk I/O test 121 118
CPU test MPEG2-DVD 151 2232
CPU test H.264 BR 133 86
CPU / GPU 96 8
Total Time  501 435

Premiere Pro uses the Mercury Playback Engine, which has been designed with Nvidia to utilise hardware acceleration with certain cards (Quadro mainly). While some of the high end GeForce cards support MPE acceleration the GTS450 does not.

Note 2 - The Quadro card takes longer with this test because all cards that support hardware assisted MPE encode MPEG2-DVD at maximum quality, while those that use the software assisted MPE encode at a lower quality giving a faster speed. The Quadro card makes up for it with increased H.264 and CPU/GPU testing scores. If we exclude this test then we would get a 40% reduction in total time!
